IClaim Google+ URLf you haven’t heard, Google+ announced that they are expanding the availability of custom URL’s. This has been a long awaited request by many using Google+, including yours truly. Now you have your profile or page directed to Google.com/+yourname.

Why you should have a custom URL?

  1. It makes it easier to remember.
  2. You can put it on your business card, website or any other collateral.
  3. It’s always better to have a unique name that matches your brand, then a generic number.

How To Claim Your Google+ URL

Google has certain criteria that has to be met on profiles or pages to be able to claim a custom URL. If you meet the criteria, Google will send you an email to notify you that your account is ready to claim your custom URL. If you receive this email, click on the link and follow the steps on the screen. If you don’t receive an email, you can log into your account and if Google determines your account meets all criteria, you will have a banner across the top asking you to confirm your URL.

The criteria to claim a custom URL includes

For profiles:

  • Have a profile photo
  • Have at least 10 followers
  • Have an account that’s at least 30 days old

For pages:

Must have a linked website

OR

Verified local business

NOTE: If you have anything mapped or pointed to your OLD Google+ URL, for example an article or button on your website, no worries! It will still direct users to your Google+ profile or page. However, you should update it as soon as possible because you never know if or when Google will change that.
